Mural: Night Light

Address: 1313 1 St SE
If you stand quietly and keep still, you may discover you're not the only visitor drawn by the light in this window. Inspired by the stillness and beauty of a winter nighttime view, this pyjama-clad character has crept out of bed for a quiet encounter with the world outside. Mary Haasdyk and Jarett Sitter developed this work collaboratively, and hope it will encourage you to enjoy the quiet winter moments this season and to bring others into them with you.
MARY HAASDYK is a Calgary-based illustrator. She studied at the Alberta University of the Arts and enjoys drawing and painting both traditionally and digitally. She has a portfolio of work that includes editorial and publishing along with public art and has had various opportunities to contribute to the Calgary community through murals, neighbourhood artwork, and leading the utility box mentorship program with the City of Calgary last summer. She enjoys exploring the simple and mundane through a fantastical lens in her narrative work.
JARETT SITTER is a Chinese-German-Polish mixed media artist based in Calgary, Alberta. He has a BFA from the University of Lethbridge’s New Media program. Moving back to Calgary upon graduation, this is where he continues to create artwork.
His illustrations delve deep into the dreamlike and the fantastical, with outsider themes of the misunderstood monster being a common thread within his work. A narrative usually arises, making his art accessible to the casual viewer but rewarding scrutiny and contemplation by revealing more about the piece. His illustrations mix ink and digital mediums, and as an animator, these illustrations are often given life within the video. He has created artwork for a wide variety of projects including album covers, gig posters, band merch, editorial illustrations, magazine covers, music festival promo material, film festival promo, theatre productions public art installations and more.
